Happy Valley Croquet Club
Welcome to Happy Valley Croquet Club. We have been actively playing croquet since the children were small, when we played nine wicket garden croquet - that's a few years ago, since the kids don't seem to be living at home anymore. The latest incarnation is six wicket Association Rules croquet and Golf croquet with co-founder Peter Rassenti and anyone else that we can persuade to play. There have been rare sightings of our other co-founder, Phillipe Lucas, who is to blame for the monster that he created. The Nerdy Facts The lawn is an odd one - 120ft long and 45ft wide - any wider and I would have to remove the orchard, and, according to my dearly beloved, that is non-negotiable. There is a 6 inch slope along the length east to west, and lots of gently random lumpy spots throughout. I cut the grass at 1/4 inch with a Toro Greensmaster, which makes the lawn really fast and the hoops are set at close to competition width, 3 11/16 inch. The grass is mainly Champion Rye, irrigated one inch a week during May to September and fertilized occasionally with milorganite. Playing time Sunday afternoons or by appointment. Donations towards upkeep gratefully accepted! Check with Michael - Michael@happyvalleylavender.com or call 250-474-5767. The Victoria croquet scene There is an active inter-club life at the Canadian Pacific Lawn Bowling Club in downtown Victoria. This is the place for many guerilla croquet clubs to meet under the aegis of the Victoria Croquet Club. We hold singles and doubles tournaments and have played friendly tournaments with the Vancouver Croquet Club. Check their website for scheduled play.
